Tailgating Traditions

Since the day Jim and I started dating back in 2004 I knew I had to become a hardcore Eagle fan if this relationship was going to prosper. It took me a while to get used to. All through college me and my girlfriends really didn't get into the game itself. All we were worried about was what blue and yellow outfit we could find that would be cute enough to where all day and all night. The boys would wake up and be at the Snooky's (an old local restuarant in town) at 8am while us girls ran to the store to get our wine at about 11am when we woke up. We would meet at another local bar/restaurant Dingus to eat lunch and then we would finally meet everyone at the Sigma Chi house around 1:00, depending on what time the game started. We would hang out all day, go to the game for maybe an hour, go back home to sneak in a quick nap and shower, and then head back to the bars to meet back up with everyone. In the meantime, the boys had not missed a minute of Georgia Southern football. They stayed whistle to whistle and cheered the entire rest of the day (that's if we won). They came stomping into the bars yelling and being those obnoxious football fans until someone finally acknowledged that the eagles had won the game. Oh, the days of college football!

Now a days things are so different for me. We don't step foot near the fraternity houses (probably because we don't know a soul there), I cook the entire day before, and I actually give a hoot about the game! What has happened to me? We are GSU Booster members so we have a parking spot where we set up shop. We have a tent, a grill, games, chairs, and plenty of food and drinks. We are next to a few other guys that we went to school with that are just as hardcore about GSU as Jim is so it works out well. The girls make the apps and sides and the boys do all the grilling. This weekend we are kicking off the season and I am already working on our 'menu'. Here are a few new items I will be adding to my regulars(sausage balls, bean dip, rotel dip, etc.).

Chewy Football Cookies

What You Need

1/4 C. cocoa
1 1/2 C. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 C. butter
3/4 C. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 can of vanillafrosting

Sift the cocoa, flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a bowl, then set aside. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; continue mixing until all is smooth and creamy. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 325*

Lightly sprinkle the table with sugar before rolling out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out football-shaped cookies and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Remember to flip every other cookie over on the baking tray so that the cookies will match up evenly when they are paired together. Make sure to cut out an even number of cookies to match as pairs. Bake for 8 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully move cookies from the baking sheet to cooling racks. Cool completely before icing. Spread the icing in-between 2 cookies and draw on football laces on the top cookie.

I think I'm going to try this too. I love anything crab and this doesn't look too hard.

Crab Football Spread

Ingredients:
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup (4 ounces) provolone cheese, shredded
1 cup crabmeat, drained, flaked and cartilage removed
1 cup (8 ounces) 4% cottage cheese
2 teaspoons seafood seasoning
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
Pretzel sticks
Assorted crackers and/or fresh vegetables

Directions: In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add cheddar cheese, provolone cheese, crab, cottage cheese, seafood seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and mustard; mix well. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Form mixture into a football shape. Arrange pretzel over top for laces. Serve with crackers and/or vegetables.

I sure would love to get Jim one of these handy little things one day....

This is what I'll be wearing this game :) It is much cuter in person, I promise. Not to mention, it's comfy and was on sale a few weeks ago at Urban Outfitters here in Savannah.

And some good ol' Jack Rogers.

Happy Football Season Everyone!
